THE EARLY YEARS
Rebecca Grace Jones was born into a family of artists in Hagerstown, Maryland on January 22, 1954. Encouraged to explore her creative abilities from the time she could hold a brush, she produced her first book of illustrated poetry in the second grade. Throughout her school years art class was "Becky’s" favorite time of day. Outside of class, she enjoyed painting in the evenings and weekends and took instruction at the local YMCA. In high school she worked on set designs for the drama club.

COLLEGE AND A CAREER After high school, as an art major at Towson University, Rebecca studied graphic design and illustration. She received a BFA in 1976 and began a career as a commercial artist. She produced illustrations for a variety of clients including Time/Life Books, National Geographic Society, Aerospace Corporation, Federal Express and Dupont. After returning to Towson for an MFA in the 80s, Rebecca taught for 12 years in the graphic arts department of her alma mater as well as Maryland College of Art and Design.

WORDS AND WEAVINGS When the computer entered the field of commercial art it didn’t take long for Rebecca to realize it was not her medium. She knew she preferred a hands-on approach to making art. While in college she had acquired a loom and had taught herself to weave. One day she dusted of the 24" Harrisville floor loom and started to play. She got the idea to cut up one of her abstract watercolor paintings and weave the strips into a piece of fabric. Happy with the look of this new technique, she decided to enhance the effect by writing words onto the strips and "Words and Weavings" was born. Since 1995 Rebecca has been selling her framed weavings at fine art and craft shows. Her work is also available in stores and galleries across the country. She sells to customers who visit her studio, contact her by phone or through email.
